Expansion Joints: The Detail That Sinks Car Park Decks

More deck leaks originate at movement joints than anywhere else. The joint is a moving component, and it has to be specified as one.

A car park deck moves every day. Thermal cycling in the UAE can swing a suspended slab through 30°C between dawn and mid-afternoon, and every millimetre of that movement is absorbed at the joint.

The most common failure we record is a joint sealed with a general-purpose sealant chosen on price rather than movement accommodation factor. It debonds within a season and water begins tracking into the slab edge.

The second is nosing failure. Without a repaired, correctly profiled concrete nosing, traffic loading chips the arris and the sealant loses its bond face entirely.

A durable detail rebuilds the nosing in a polymer-modified repair mortar, installs a correctly sized backer rod, and uses a joint system rated for the measured movement — not the assumed one.
